To tell you a little bit about myself, I’m the middle child of three children (the only boy). I’m currently a sophomore in High School. I am an avid gamer. I’ve been trying to pick up the sport of soccer. And I’ve been learning about computers for as long as I can remember.
Before coming to the applab I had taken two previous programming courses. The first when I was ten, and the second when I was thirteen. In the first course I programmed three different video games(one as a tutorial). It would’ve been a great course, but so much of the game was pre-made for us, that all I really learned to do was assign character controls and create a background. In the second course, me and a partner designed, built, and programmed a “Legobot” to clear an obstacle course. I actually learned quite a bit in this program, but sadly I forgot most of it before I came to the Applab.
After the Legobots course, there was almost a three year gap until I saw code again here at the Applab, and by then I had forgotten most of what I learned. When I got to the Applab I had to almost completely re-learn everything. When Ms. Leshell and Mr. Marco teach, I’m caught in between “Ah ha!” moments and “Why didn’t I think of that?” moments, because some stuff just jogs my memory, while other stuff is completely new but kind of obvious if you think about it.
The most difficult part about the AppLab, is balancing it with other things in my schedule. Between soccer, schoolwork, and other pressing matters, the Applab doesn’t always get the time it deserves. I can’t wait till’ the summer, where there will be much more free time on my hands.
